Windows Preview Pane

Question

I am facing an issue of the windows preview pane in windows 11 i cant see my PDF, Xlsx Jpeg, Jpg, Png etc files preview, the windows Preview pan is select and i works for some files but some files don't show preview i tried some of the solutions that Unblock-File -Path "Folder Path" but it is not resolving for all the things like new download files are still not opening and it is only applicable for download folder.

Since the October 14, 2025 update, File Explorer automatically disables the preview feature for files downloaded from the internet.

Here are the workarounds:

Option 1

Right-click on each downloaded file, and click Properties. Select Unblock and click OK.

Restart Windows for the change to take effect.

Option 2

If you have many files that need to be unblocked, you can use the Streams utility from Microsoft.

c:\tools\streams.exe -s -d %userprofile%\downloads\

The above command unblocks all files in the Downloads folder and subfolders.

I checked all the settings are enable but still not working, preview tab is enable and i want to preview all the folders not only download folder files

Windows 11 now has additional security behavior that directly affects previews for files downloaded from the internet, especially PDFs and other file types.

1. Starting with the October 2025 security updates, File Explorer automatically disables the preview feature for files that are marked as coming from the Internet (have Mark of the Web/MotW). These are typically files downloaded from browsers, email, or Internet Zone file shares. For such files, the preview pane will not show the content and instead shows a security warning message.
2. For individual downloaded files that are trusted, remove the internet security block:
   • In File Explorer, right‑click the file.
   • Select Properties.
   • On the General tab, select Unblock.
   • Select OK.
   • The change might not take effect until the next sign‑in.
3. For files on an Internet Zone file share that are trusted, add the share to a safer security zone (affects all files from that share, so only do this if fully trusted):
   • Open Internet Options (Control Panel → Internet Options).
   • Go to the Security tab.
   • Select either Local intranet or Trusted sites.
   • Select Sites and add the file share’s address.
   • This relaxes security for all files from that share.
4. If the preview pane works for some local files but not others (and those others are not internet‑blocked), also verify the Windows preview handler setting:
   • In File Explorer, select View → Preview pane to ensure it is enabled.
   • Open Options (Folder Options) → View tab.
   • In Advanced settings, ensure Show preview handlers in preview pane is checked.
5. If using PowerToys File Explorer add‑ons for PDF or other previews, ensure those extensions are turned On in PowerToys settings. A reboot may be required for thumbnail/preview changes to take effect.

For newly downloaded files, this behavior is by design after the security update. Each downloaded file must be unblocked (or obtained from a trusted zone location) before File Explorer will show its preview.
