Bitlocker Key

Hello,

I was going to install a Bios update today, and it gave me a warning about making sure I have my bitlocker key. I wasn't sure what that was so I consulted google. After checking my Microsoft account online, there's no bitlocker key listed for my device, and I have seen a few comments online saying Windows 11 Home (which I have), doesn't have a bitlocker key. I just wanted to check on here for advice before I go ahead with my update and potentially screw myself.

Thanks

It's very important to disable Device Encryption or BitLocker protection (depending on which one your computer has) before you install a BIOS update, and your computer manufacturer should include a warning that clearly states this. (I can explain why, if you want to know.)

You can re-enable Device Encryption or BitLocker after the BIOS update is installed.

That's a wise precaution. Windows 11 Home does not use Bitlocker but may use Device Encryption. If so, it should store it in your MS account but to be sure -

To see if Device Encryption is on -

Open Settings → Privacy & security → Device encryption. If it it is on, run this command in an elevated command prompt

    manage-bde -protectors -get C:

It will show the 48 digit recovery key. Copy that into a text file and print it! (i.e. make sure you can access it.)

In a previous update to Windows 11 Bitlocker was added to the Home version after a clean install of Windows 11, so it depends on when you installed Windows 11 Home, your drive may or may not be encrypted with Bitlocker.

    1

I need to check if your drive is actually encrypted with Bitlocker.

Right click your Start Button and open Disk Management.

Please provide a screenshot of that window showing all drives and partitions in the bottom pane.

    2

If your drive is encrypted with Bitlocker, the only place the Bitlocker Recovery key is automatically stored is on the associated Microsoft account on the link below, be sure to check any Microsoft account that may have been used on the PC and also any work or school account that may be linked to the PC.

(Note, even if your device does not show on the Microsoft account, the Bitlocker Recovery Key may still be available on this link)

Are you able to find the Bitlocker Recovery Key on any account that may have been used or linked to the PC?
