it has lied about many things.

things we all know the answer to but copilot lies and misrepresentation of factual information is alarming.

As a user myself, I completely understand your frustration with the "hallucination" issue that can occur with AI models, here specifically Copilot. It can sometimes feel like you're arguing with the AI when it confidently gives an answer that you know, as a matter of fact, is wrong. So I get why you're concerned.

That said, I need to clarify that Copilot does not intentionally "lie" to you. This is unfortunately a current limitation of generative AI systems in general. They generate responses by predicting data patterns rather than understanding facts the way a human would, so their information is sometimes incorrect, incomplete, or even fabricated. That's why AI-generated responses should always be verified against reliable sources, especially when it comes to important topics.

Another thing worth noting is that one of the main differences between AI models is the data they were trained on and optimized for. E.g. a model designed primarily around historical information may perform better on history-related questions than a model designed primarily for coding or cooking. Still, mistakes can still happen regardless of the model. At the current stage of this technology, no model is completely immune to these kinds of errors, including Copilot.

That's not meant to excuse the behavior, though. When an answer sounds authoritative, it's reasonable to expect the information to be accurate, especially when you're relying on it to learn something or make a decision.

Since AI models depend a lot on its data sources and quality, they need the help of users. If you encounter an incorrect response, please provide additional context or correct the model where possible. Also consider submitting feedback through Copilot so Microsoft can review the issue and continue improving the service.
