SharePoint Permissions Problems

Hi there,

I'm not sure if anyone has experienced this issue before, but it's surely a strange one!

Our organisation suffered network issues last week with our DR site and since then we are having problems with SharePoint permissions. Some users have been removed from SharePoint groups automatically and previously deleted users have appeared automatically into SharePoint groups again. This has effected all of our SharePoint farms.

The only thing in common that these SharePoint farms have is they share a SQL server that's a member of a failover cluster. This group contains two SQL servers that are configured for manual failover. I don't believe this is a SQL issue as there appears to be no data loss, plus database replication is reported to be healthy on the SQL side of things. Plus other non SharePoint SQL instances are not reporting any issues with data loss / permissions.

I've checked SharePoint audit logs, SQL logs, server logs but I can't seem to see anything wrong! I'm pulling my hair out! Has anyone experienced permissions issues such as this before? And if so, how was it resolved? Am I looking in the right places?

Thanks,

Aled.

    Hi Aled,

I'm a DBA, been part of part in supporting sharepoint deployment.
I have also seen the some situation the sharepoint upgrads which removes the Farm account access sometimes.
Where we have manually added recreated.
In your case, as its SQL WFC, the access will be same in each node where ever it runs. So please check if that something similar.
I would suggest to have conversation in Sharepoint Blog side as this is not really a person from SQL side can help.

And next time when you run just ran a trace or audit to the farm accounts alone for the access changes will help to identify the cause.

SharePoint doesn't remove users from groups/sites or restore users to sites/groups automatically as it has no mechanism to do this in code.

What may have happened is that you're working with an older copy of the Content Database(s) that weren't replicating properly. What form of SQL replication was in place?
