Troubleshooting & Known Issues - Universal Print on macOS
Known Universal Print issues
Setup
3. App will fail to install if a non-filesystem location is selected during setup
- Issue: During installation, the user is asked for a location to store the Preference Pane. If a location like the "My MacBook" is selected (which doesn't map to an actual directory), the installation will fail. |
- Workarounds: ➡️ Restart the installation and select a directory in the filesystem.
- Planned Fixes: ✅ The fix is completed, awaiting rollout.
4. App will fail to install if the user's Home directory is not the same as their username
- Issue: When providing permissions during installation, the install will fail if the user's home directory is different than their username. You can check if this is the case by running
whoami
and checking if the result is the same name as the Home directory. - Workarounds: ❌ There is no workaround.
- Planned Fixes: ✅ The fix is completed, awaiting rollout.
Authentication
2. Authentication state is reset when closing the app
- Issue: After closing and re-opening the app, it may show that you are no longer signed in. Printing will still work in this state, and clicking "Sign in" again will show the correct state.
- Workarounds: ❌ There is no workaround.
- Planned Fixes: ✅ The fix is planned.
6. Cannot switch user accounts
- Issue: Once a user logs into the the Universal Print app, there is no way to log out and switch to a different account.
- Workarounds: ➡️ To use a different account with Universal Print, create a different account in macOS or use the Guest account. Then, log into the desired Microsoft Entra ID account.
- Planned Fixes: ✅ The fix is planned.
Other
1. Print jobs do not appear in the print queue
- Issue: After submitting a print job, opening the printer's queue shows no jobs.
- Workarounds: ❌ There is no workaround.
- Planned Fixes: ✅ This issue is fixed in macOS Sonoma 14.2.
5. When opening the Universal Print app, system settings doesn't automatically navigate to the Universal Print page
- Issue: When a user opens the Universal Print app (e.g., from the desktop, Finder, Spotlight, or Mission Control), the System Settings app launches and does not navigate to the Universal Print page.
- Workarounds: ➡️ Manually navigate to the Universal Print page by scrolling to the bottom of the navigation menu and selecting Universal Print.
- Planned Fixes: ✅ The fix is planned.
Printers with known issues
The below printer models are known to have issues when used with Universal Print on macOS when connected directly to Universal Print. Print jobs sent to these printers are likely to be aborted. We're looking into possible solutions.
Tip
You can still use these printers with Universal Print on macOS if you register them using the connector instead of registering them directly with Universal Print.
