When we try to create a VM in azure , we get several options for PostgreSQL. I wanted to know if the azure VM on Postgre in below screenshot are managed .i.e . OS updates are taken care by Azure etc.

Hi @MS Techie - The answer is basically yes to officially supported distros that are published to the Azure Marketplace. It is a requirement that the 3rd party provide fixes and updates: Image Update Cadence Please also see supported distributions and versions ( link ). If the image was brought to Azure as a VM image, that would not be subject to automatic updates. So in the screenshot i gave earlier , we see that most publishers are Postgres Professional .

So i assume that if one creates an Azure VM with this image , will it be Azure's responsibility to do OS updates or will it be the responsibility of Postgres Professional to do updates ?
or
is it just an Image with specific version of Postgres , where in OS updates should be done by the user and not the Publisher of the image , which in this example is Postgres Professional .?

Please guide.

The OS updates are in fact provided by Azure for the initial SKU that was initially deployed and until that SKU reaches end-of-support, etc. The PostgreSQL Server images are provided to Azure Marketplace by the vendor in agreement with Azure Marketplace and the customer must manually (or programmatically) deploy updated PostgreSQL images that may include major or minor releases.

So if there is any image given by vendor like Postgres Professional , the image will be regularly updated by the vendor , so that we always have the latest , when we choose the image for next time.

My question was will the VM also be manged by them ... but then i gave it a thought and realized , if VM is also managed with azure taking care of OS updates etc, then it would be a PaaS option , not IaaS option.

So if i have install azure VM with Postgres version 12 and after 3 to 4 months , if postgres releases version 13 of database , then i will automatically get a pop-up in my azure VM , to upgrade to the latest version of postgres . I think you are referring about this point.

Correct, @McTechie . If you were to deploy a bundled OS + PostgreSQL Server image, both OS and Server updates are provided by the vendor. In the scenario you presented, the OS updates are managed by Azure and the PostgreSQL updates are provided by the vendor.
