How to remove WAF policy safely or disassociate WAF policy .

We have an AKAMAI device before the App GW in our environment hence we do not need WAF capability anymore.

What is the safest way to do so.

Also can I do it via portal and if I am doing it via portal do i have to stop the AppGW?

Welcome to the Microsoft Q&A Platform. Thank you for reaching out & I hope you are doing well.

I understand that you would like to know how to remove the WAF Policy from Application Gateway.

Currently, Azure App Gateway WAFV2 does not support you to tier down to Standard V2.

This means, at all times, the App gateway would require you to have a WAF Policy associated to it.

While you can swap a Policy attached to a gateway, I am afraid you will not be able to remove the WAF Policy completely.

Alternatively, you can disable the WAF or keep it in the Prevention mode.

This should not require you to Stop/Start the App Gateway.

You should be able to do the above using the Portal in the WAF Policy Overview page

The Pricing difference between WAF V2 and Standard v2 is,

Fixed cost :

Variable cost :

Since you are actually not downgrading to Standard V2 Tier, the pricing of WAF V2 would apply.

However, in case you were using an older WAF Engine, as below, (with no WAF policy)

You can still downgrade to Standard V2
