Hello,

I hope this post finds you well. Could you provide me with some support in resolving an issue that has appeared recently?

When attempting to open SmallBasic (versions 1.2 or 1.3) I get the following errors:

I tried 1.3 as a resolution, which appeared to resolve the issue for a while, but it has started to crash again.

Any advice would be great.

I even tried to email NonkiTakahashi (author of many Small Basic demos) and he suggested "Please check your .NET Framework 3.5 is enabled in Control Panel."
I checked, turned on, rebooted, but still no luck, the issue persists...

Hi Simon,

I assume you are using the AppStore version of Small Basic, this is the only 1.3 version. Unfortunately, this error number is very generic and doesn't suggest a specific issue. Looking at the AppStore review of version 1.3 you are not alone.

Microsoft isn't updating Small Basic and I would characterise both the AppStore and online versons of Small Basic as 'unfinished work in progress'.

I would strongly recommend the desktop version 1.2. While it is also not maintained by MS, it does work well, has a community of supporting users and can be used with extensions that can both extend and fix some issues.

Whatever you try, I would first try full uninstall using 'Add or remove programs' first before a reboot, then install.

Hello,

Thank you for the suggestion; I was also having the same issue with the desktop version 1.2. My current fix for this is reimaging the whole machine, which isn't plausible. I have tried reinstalling the app, but the issue continues.

Do you have any other suggestions? And how could I reach the community of supporting users as I could not find them in my search?

The Small Basic community is a bit fragmented following the demise of the MSDN forum a few years ago, but Facebook is probably the best. I am trying to restart a forum at https://litdev.uk/mybb, but this it very early stages.

It may be that the different versions installed that are messing stuff up. Really try hard to get rid of them all, especially the AppStore version.

For your issue I would try:

1] Unistall ALL versions of Small Basic you have using 'Add or Remove Programs' from Start menu - official uninstallers should clean registry settings etc. Don't try to edit registry manually.

2] Only after uninstall, delete the installation directories if they still exist.

3] Ensure you have recent .Net 4, min .Net 4.5, recommend .Net 4.8. See top answer to this post to check. I would probably just install recent, you can get latest .Net 4.8.1 runtime from here.

3] Reboot

4] Install Small Basic desktop 1.2

If this fails then try downloading, unblock zip (right click Properties->Unblock), extract zip and run a simple compiled Small Basic program to check that .Net is correctly installed. You can get this from my website, link icon highlighted below.
