While logging into a domain joined machine using local administrator access, I encountered an error message as shown in the screenshot. Sometimes, rebooting the machine resolves this issue. However, this time it still persists.

What is the cause of this issue ? Is there a permanent solution for it ?

also, tried the below solution.

    Hello $@chin
Sometimes, if the service fails to start, it can prevent successful sign-in, leading to the error message you've seen. Rebooting can sometimes temporarily resolve the issue by resetting the service status.

One effective method is to boot the computer into safe mode to enable the built-in administrator account and examine the User Profile Service's status. Start by rebooting your PC into safe mode from the settings menu under "Change PC settings" and "Advanced startup." Once in safe mode, open the Command Prompt as an administrator and activate the built-in administrator account by entering net user administrator /active:yes. Log off from your current account and log in with the administrator account. Check the User Profile Service by typing Services.msc in the Run command, right-clicking on User Profile Service, and ensuring it's running and set to Automatic startup. Additionally, consider creating a new user account to see if the issue persists with a new set of user data. After troubleshooting, remember to disable the administrator account using the command net user administrator /active:no for security reasons.

From the error screenshot, it seems user profile load is failing. Can you confirm if this is only failing for new user login or any existing users are experiencing the issue as well?

Can you login to the server by any other user? If yes, do you see any related events in application events and also under Applications and Services Logs>Microsoft>Windows>User Profile Service>operational.

I have seen this issue mostly for new user login due to default profile corruption. You can try to copy the default profile folder under C:\users\default profile(hidden folder) from a different working server which has same build OS and replace it on the affected server.

    Hi $@chin,

Thank you for posting in the Q&A Forums.

There are several potential reasons why the “User Profile Service” (UPS) fails to sign in:

The user profile may have become corrupted, preventing a successful sign-in. This could be due to a file system failure, disk error, or unexpected operation.

The user may not have sufficient privileges to access their user profile or other necessary resources. This could be due to a domain policy, a permissions misconfiguration, or a user account setup problem.

There may be problems with some system components on the operating system or domain controller that prevent the successful loading of user profiles.

Problems with the connection between the computer and the domain controller may cause the logon to fail.

I think the most likely problem you're experiencing is caused by a corrupted user profile, which may require deleting the affected user's profile and having the system recreate a new one. This usually requires administrator privileges and some system configuration.

    Best regards

    Neuvi Jiang
