Where does the .NET Desktop Runtime installer launch from?

I have an installer for Gates Corp Design Power which recognizes that .NET Desktop Runtime is not installed and automatically initiates an installation of it. I need to know where it is finding the installer.

Also knowing what permissions to what, that the Runtime installer needs would be helpful.

Our desktops are locked down, and I am using a Privilege Manager to elevate the permission for the Design Power installer, but am blocked when the Desktop Runtime installation launches.

Hi @KKoop ,

Usually, the automatically downloaded installation package is placed in a temporary folder on the system. You can press Win + R to open the run window, then type %temp% and press enter. This will open your temporary folder, where you can look for the relevant installation package.

If it doesn't exist, then manually download the required installation package and install it.

Thank you for the quick response. If I understand correctly, the .NET installer is downloaded into the directory identified in %TEMP% and launched from there?

I'm not concerned about getting the installer downloaded, I need to elevate the privileges on the installer via the Privilege Manager process.

As a test, I added a Privilege Elevation Rule which elevates the TEMP directory, sub folders and child processes with Administrator privilege. Unfortunately, that did not allow the installation of the runtime package to proceed.

Some software saves the downloaded installation package in a specific cache directory. You can look for the installation directory of the app you're installing or its associated configuration file to see if you can find the relevant cache directory. If you can't find it, ask the software developer for help.

Manually downloading and installing .NET Desktop Runtime installer can also help you avoid the problem of automatic installation of missing permissions.

Thanks, Jiachen. I found a path referenced in the details of the administrator credential prompt, but when I elevate the privilege there, it does not affect the problem.

A manual download/install of the Runtime is not a solution for my situation. I am using a Privilege Manager to elevate end-users to install specific software, so I can keep the workstations locked-down against unauthorized installation.
The purpose of the PM platform is to take IT involvement out of the software installation request beyond assigning the Privilege Elevation to the requesting user, and his software needs.

This is working great on all the other software packages. This installer-initiated "sub installation" is the only thing hanging me up from production deployment.

Hi Jiachen,

I had been working with the developer, but their response was a bit slow.

For the record, the solution was to elevate the privilege on the path, which I noted above, using the following syntax:

C:\users*\AppData\Local\Temp

Once I had the path defined like that, the privilege elevation for the .NET Runtime installer works and the end-user is able to install the full application
