We are trying to export mailbox to a pst on Exchange 2016. We have tried this with different users, on different systems, using different browsers all with the same results. My account (and the other Engineer) are members of the Discovery Management role in Exchange. We have recreated the discovery mailbox, tried simplifying or changing the sources and search query of the discoveries, checked IIS permissions.

any idea how to resolve this?

    Hi @Kanchana Jayathilake,

Welcome to the Microsoft Forum for technical support.

Based on your description, I would like to explain to you that members of the "Discovery Management" role group in Exchange usually have permissions to perform mailbox searching, but may not have permissions to export mailboxes to PST files. To perform export operations, the "Mailbox Import Export" role is required. This role is not assigned to any role group by default, including "Discovery Management".A screenshot of a white boxDescription automatically generated

You need to add yourself or another engineer to the "Mailbox Import Export" role. This can be done through the Exchange Admin Center (EAC) or the Exchange Management Shell. Here are the instructions for adding a role through the Exchange Management Shell:

New-ManagementRoleAssignment –Role "Mailbox Import Export" –User "Username"

Replace "Username" with the user account you want to grant import and export permissions.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any queries.

    Best,

    Jake Zhang

    Hi @Kanchana Jayathilake,

Great to know that the issue has already been resolved and thanks for sharing the solution so that others experiencing the same thing can easily reference this! Since the Microsoft Q&A community has a policy that "The question author cannot accept their own answer. They can only accept answers by others", I'll repost your solution in case you'd like to "Accept" the answer : )

    --------------

    Issue Symptom:

The user has been assigned the Mailbox Import Export role and can also perform mailbox exports successfully. This error pops up when trying to access the admin audit log through ECP and powesherell while the task is running in the background:

The request failed. The underlying connection was closed: An unexpected error occured on a receive.

After rebooting the server after the patch update, this error disappeared for a few hours, and then it reappeared.

    **Resolution:**Enable Extended Protection.

    Best,

    Jake Zhang
