BURN A DISK

The image is an example of what appeared on my laptop's screen.

I inserted a DVD RW on my laptop and a tab showed up where it says "How do you want to use this disc?" I chose number 1 since it allows me to save, edit and delete files. Then suddenly another tab showed up where it says "Formatting (4.7 GB)" Why did it happen, why did the DVD suddenly undergo formatting? Is that how it really works? And does it mean that the DVD was empty? Or was the DVD emptied?

When you choose to use a DVD RW "like a USB flash drive," it initiates a process called "Live File System" formatting. This formatting is necessary because it prepares the disc to allow drag-and-drop file management, similar to how you would manage files on a USB flash drive.

This formatting process would indeed empty the disc if it previously contained data. If the disc was already empty, it simply prepares the disc for the intended use.

This is a standard process for making a DVD RW usable in a more flexible manner. It ensures that the disc can handle the operations you expect from a USB flash drive.

Based on my research, Burn, in the context of technology and computing, usually refers to the process of writing data onto a compact disc (CD), digital versatile disc (DVD) or Blu-Ray disc. This term comes from the fact that the data is literally "burned" into the disc using a laser in the disc drive. If you're using a compact disc-rewritable (CD-RW) or digital versatile disc-re-writable (DVD-RW) (rewritable discs), burning new data will erase any old data that was on the disc.

For the reason that the window always pop up, it's because it's a re-writable disc that Windows offers to format it (so you can copy files to it just like it was a hard drive). When the options box pops up, just close it. For a permanent fix, set the following value in the Registry: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer] "NoCDBurning"=dword:00000001
