Migrating AD Joined Laptop from On-prem DC to DC in Azure

We have 2 on-prem DCs that we are planning to move to Azure. These DCs are physical devices running on old hardware and will be decommissioned. My laptop is AD joined to one of these DCs, so I'm wondering:

  • Will my device still be active if I move my DC to Azure?
  • Do I need any special setup like VPN to connect to DC in Azure?
  • Does it break anything on my devices?
  • Do I have to rejoin my machine to the domain again?

Any assistance on these questions would be highly appreciated. Thanks and regards.

Hi Tabani,Welcome to the Microsoft Q&A Platform! Thank you for asking your question here.

    • Yes, your device will remain active even after moving your domain controller to Azure, as this action primarily relocates the DC.
    • Yes, you will need a secure network connection between your on-premises network and Azure via a Site-to-Site VPN or ExpressRoute.
    • The migration itself shouldn't break anything on your device, but you might experience some temporary disruptions to your workflow. Ensure you have a stable internet connection to maintain connectivity with the Azure-based DC.
    • You do not need to rejoin your machine to the domain after moving the DC to Azure.
