Make DVD Player default action

I want to play old DVDs. I picked a DVD/Blu-ray player from the MS store [DVD and Blu-ray PLUS] which works great. The problem is that I want this app to launch anytime I insert a DVD. I can't seem to find a way to do this. When I insert, I'm expecting it to allow me to select an App to always use but the only options are MS Store and Take No Action. I tried to go into Default Apps but I don't know how to configure All DVDs from there. Please advise.

Well, as Microsoft does not seem to have a solution, I found one. Forget the MS store apps and just use free 3rd party software VLC Player works like a charm and automatically opens DVDs upon insert.

    Hello Dom,

Thank you for posting question on Microsoft Windows forum!

Based on your query of allowing you to select your favorite App when inserting a DVD. You can try the following methods.

    Method 1: Using AutoPlay Settings

    1. Open Control Panel: The easiest way to get to the "old" Control Panel (which has more detailed AutoPlay settings) is to press the Windows key + R to open the Run dialog, type control and press Enter.
    2. Navigate to AutoPlay: In the Control Panel, change the "View by" option (top right) to Large icons or Small icons if it's currently set to Category. Then, click on AutoPlay.
    3. Configure DVD Settings:
    • Make sure "Use AutoPlay for all media and devices" is checked.
    • Scroll down to the "DVDs" section.
    • For "DVD movie," "Enhanced DVD movie," and "Software and games" (if applicable), click the dropdown menu next to each.
    • Look for "DVD and Blu-ray PLUS" in the list. Select it for each relevant DVD option.
    • Click Save at the bottom.

Method 2: Setting Default Apps by File Type

    • While this does not directly control the "insert disc and launch" behavior for DVDs, it's good to ensure the app is set as the default for DVD-related file types.
    1. Open Settings: Press Windows key + I to open the Settings app.
    2. Go to Apps: Click on "Apps" in the left-hand menu.
    3. Select Default apps: Click on "Default apps" in the right pane.
    4. Find "DVD and Blu-ray PLUS": Scroll through the list of apps or use the search bar to find "DVD and Blu-ray PLUS." Click on it.
    5. Review File Type Associations: You'll see a list of file types that the app can open. While DVDs don't have a single universal file extension like .mp4, they are often associated with .vob, .ifo, and the "DVD" protocol. Ensure that "DVD and Blu-ray PLUS" is set as the default for any relevant entries you find there. If you don't see specific DVD entries, don't worry, the AutoPlay settings are more critical for this scenario.

Hope the above information is helpful!
