Troubleshooting browser crashes or performance issues on Windows 10
This browser is no longer supported.
Upgrade to Microsoft Edge to take advantage of the latest features, security updates, and technical support.
when i try to open Edge from a shortcut, I get the message that it failed to open because the side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Everything I see about the side- by -side error is about installing. If I try to open it from the list of apps, it won't open. This application has been working well for a few years, even this morning, so what do i do to correct it? I don't want to use instructions that apply to installing software, as I don't want to mess anything up. I would appreciate step-by-step instructions if possible, as I am elderly. Thank you!

Thank you. Your list of things missing seems to indicate that the installation was interrupted for some reason. As you might guess, some of what setup needs is in its companion .data file (which may, incidentally, be looked upon with disfavour by security software). You can probably see where the installation failed in the log file:
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\EdgeUpdate\Log\MicrosoftEdgeUpdate.log
Please try downloading the installer again from https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=2100017&Channel=Stable
If you need the German version, change the URL to have & language=de at the end instead of &language=en before opening it in whatever browser you have available, Internet Explorer for example.
Hi, I'm Elise, an independent advisor and I'd be happy to help with your issue.
This error is usually due to a missing component that you need to install, if you follow this link and run the file that downloads it should resolve the issue:
https://aka.ms/vs/16/release/vc_redist.x64.exe
Please let me know if you need any further assistance.
Kind Regards,
Elise

Hello,
I have Windows 10 Pro 64-Bit Version 20H2 (Build 19042.610) and have a VM in Hyper-V also running with Windows 10 Pro 64-Bit Version 20H2 (Build 19042.610).
In my VM only Windows Defender is running (no other security tools).
The OS on my PC and my VM is in German language.
This is a personal PC, not a business environment.
I have the same problem.
I started Edge and in the settings of Edge an update was offered.
While installing it, an error message is shown (unfortunately have no screen shot) so I closed Edge and rebooted the VM.
Now I can not start it anymore, get the "Side by Side configuration error" shown.
I wanted to install the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable but here I get a message shown, that an other version is already installed.
In the list of installed programs I see multiple versions installed, the current version is 14.28.29325.2, the version you linked above is 14.27.29112.0 (so one of my installed versions in newer).
Please tell me if you need a screen shot of my installed version.
I also went to the Windows 10 settings, Apps and wanted to change the installation of Edge (hoping that there is something like "Repair").
But here I get the following error:
So here the installer file is missing.
Edge is my only browser on my PC and my VM.
So I also can not download it from https://www.microsoft.com/de-de/edge
I have no idea how to make Edge working again.
Best Regards
OLLI
Thank you for replying. All of a sudden it is working again. Apparently a new version was being installed. (The search bar at the bottom of the screen referred to it as the "new" edge.) Unfortunately, it is horrible, with a home page that is gigantic, and doesnt fit on my screen at all. Rather than jump thru hoops to fix it, I will use Chriome.
but thank you for the suggestion. I appreciate the quick reply.
