Hi!

I reallllllllllllly need some help. Normally I'm good at trouble shoorting my own problems, but not this time! I was downloading a game and I selected a default program from the game to open in. When I did this all of my programs now open under the same default! I can't seem to change it back to where everything opened under their own default programs!!!

Let’s try setting program access and computer defaults to Microsoft Windows:

1.       Open Set Program Access and Computer Defaults by clicking the Start button , clicking Default Programs, and then clicking Set program access and computer defaults.  If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

2.       To specify the default programs for activities such as browsing the Internet and sending e‑mail messages on your computer, choose one of the following configurations, expand the configuration and choose options (if available), and then click OK.

You can also try System restore to a point in time prior to the problem. I hope this helps.

Hi everyone! After a long, long search I found the answer to all of our problem: that the files all open under the same program.

    It's simple:

    http://www.winhelponline.com/fileasso/lnkfix_vista.zip

Download the above, extract the file to Desktop (just right-click the zip file and click extract all) for easier access, and then just run it.

After you shut it down, wait a few moments, and start it again, everything will be back to normal.

At least, that's what happened with mine. Which is Windows 7, just in case yours is different.

See, I was really happy because all the other solutions that was offered all didn't work as one. Everyone else was like, hey, thanks, it worked, while I was like, no, it didn't?

But this one really did work, when I had no hope. Seriously, I was really surprised. And don't worry about the downloading thing from an unknown producer whatsoever because it works with no side effects. As far as I know.

This was the same for me for ages too, all the answers here didn't work for me. But I at last found the answer, for me at least. in Start you search "Default Programs" and go into "Associate a file or protocol with a program" and it will have a bunch of ".xyz" stuff. You find a file like "Notepad" and then click it. It will display the "Open With" window and you select Notepad to open with. You then select Ok and it will get fixed!

Thank you for the help!:)...But unfortunately, I've already tried that :(...When I go to a file and do exactly what you said it changes the default program to open the selected program..but it also sets all my others programs to open the same way :(. Such as, I selected to open Internet Explorer unsinf internet explorer...it also changed my computer settings so that MSN messenger, lime wire, etc to also open with Internet Explorer :(

Set Default Program To Open File Type With

    1. Right click the file, select "open with..."
    2. Click on the program you want (if it isn't in the menu you'll need to browse for it).
    3. Make sure the "always used the selected program" box is checked on the bottom of the window.
    4. Click OK.

Now that file type should always open in that program.

Also, you can follow the guides on the page linked below.

Change which programs Windows uses by default:
