Error code 43

I use Windows 7 professional (German version, so I have to guess the English terms) since about 3 weeks without significant problems. However now in the Device Manager an entry appears 'unknown device'. I can deinstall it, but when I restart the PC an error code 43 appears and the unknown device ist again listed. As far as I can see the PC and all devices (5) function properly. I have found something on Code 43 for Vista.

Impression is that the problem startet at the time when I installed a SW on the virtual xp mode. This SW worked, but at the 2nd call to it, it reported an error, it did not find a dll. I had to re-install the SW.

For this I had to start and shut down the virtual mode several times.

Some additional details:

  • I am using the 64-Bit version of Windows 7.
  • The driver info says

the driver is from Microsoft, date 6.21.2006, version 6.1.7600.16385, signature from Microsoft.

     all drivers are up-to-date

  • it says it concern a USB controller, (standard USB Hub controller), Port_#0001.Hub_#0005
  • in 'devices and printers' all my external devices are shwon as working correctly, and there is one additional 'unknown device'
  • all USB devices run OK (tested), all USB connections work OK (tested), as far as I can see.
  • I have on my PC: 6 USB connectors, 2 are used, one with an external hub which works OK
  • I have 1 firewire connector (not used)
  • 3 eSata connectors (2 are used, work OK)

Is going back to a restore point an possible solution?

    Hi Zernet,

    Welcome to Microsoft Answers!

The error code that you are getting is due to one of the drivers controlling the device notified the operating system that the device failed in some manner.

You may try uninstalling the drivers and also scan for any hardware changes in device manager.

To uninstall drivers follow the steps given below.

    1. Click StartCollapse this imageExpand this image, type Device Manager in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
    2. Click Continue. The Device Manager Dialog box is displayed.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue. 3. In the list of device types, click the kind of device, and then locate the specific device that is not functioning. 4. Right-click the device and then click Properties. 5. Click the Driver tab. 6. Click Uninstall. 7. Click OK.

    To scan for hardware changes:

    1.      Open Device Manager.

    2.      Click Action, and then click Scan for hardware changes.

    3.      Follow the instructions.

You may also try to run MS fix it from here and check if that helps.

I had the same problem with my Dell AIO 966.  Windows 7 troubleshooter told me to enable bi-directional printing on the port via printer properties.  The tricky thing was finding this dialog box. Go to your printers panel and right click on the printer with the problem.  Click printer properties.  Click on the ports tab on the top. Mark the checkbox at the bottom that says "enable bidirectional printing" and click OK.  Problem solved.

There was nothing wrong with my printer, just that tricky port setting.  In addition to this I deleted the port that had a yellow exclamation mark over it in Device Manager.

Test page finally prints.  Hope this helps.

In the meantime I have found a useful hint:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314464/EN-US/

Although it relates to Windows xp I assume it is also relevant for Windows 7, in particular as I have installed and used the virtual xp envrironment.

When I start Windows 7 in save mode, no 'unknown device' message appears, which according to the website supports the likelihood that the message is caused by a software problem in Windows 7. This interpretation is supported by the fact that my PC, all attached devices, and all USB and other outlets, appear to work properly.

Thus it seems I have to live with the confusing error message, until Microsoft will correct it in the OS.

From my side the discussion of this issue can be closed

    Hi Amrita

Thanks for your answer and the suggestions!

Unfortunately none of the proposed actions worked. I already had tried -  as first attemps - to uninstall the driver and to scan for hardware changes.

Uninstalling the driver (or deinstalling) worked until the next system start. Then, when starting the system reported the attempt to install a driver for a device,  its failure and the error in the device manager and the device and printers window appears again.

Not always but occasionally the attempt and failure of installing a driver for a new device is reported also when the system is coming back from the Energy saving state.

I tried the link in your answer (' .../Tips-for-solving problems-with-USB-devices') and followed the instructions (intrinsic problem diagnose and repair of Windows 7). The tool found the actual problem automatically:

In the Hardware and Devices Windows it reported (I translate from German)

Unknown device does not funtion properly

         Hardware changes possibly not recognized

This was it, the tool could not repair it nor propose other action.

I still suspect that this has nothing to do with real Hardware as my PC seems to function perfectly. I simply do not know which device this could be.

All my USB devices and my USB outlets work properly.

The messages are only disturbing, especially for other users of my PC who are less familiar with IT.

    Kind regards

    Zernent
