"Also -- why would I need BOTH the DirectX runtime package AND the DirectX web installer?"
You don't. The Web Installer updates DX, and only installs any 'missing' files. And while the DX Redist installer
goes way back to June 2010, it does not matter, as there have been no new DX files since then
(DX 12 comes with Win10 only).
The most recent files still end in _43.dll for DX9, 10 and 11.
- The DX Redist installer is the best option if there is a suspicion of a corrupt DX file or files as it overwrites all existing
DX files. The Web Installer only adds new files and does not overwrite existing files.
Regarding the DX Web Installer link... Mine goes to the wrong place as well.
Looks like Monopoly$oft have stuffed up and redirected it to the Win10 download page.
This happens even when logging onto the MS software download page, and clicking on their link for the DX Web Installer.
Why they would do this is anyone's guess. MS works in mysterious ways. Lucky there are no newer DX 9, 10 or 11 files.
- While they should not be confusing things by misdirecting people to the Win10 download page, I believe that
Windows Updates takes care of DX updates now, so maybe the Web installer is no longer available.
btw - I have just used my Web Installer to verify, and it had nothing new to add.
EDIT: Note that King's Quest 8 is not compatible with integrated graphics such as Intel HD 3000/4000, etc.
Maybe because it is a DOS based game (that GOG has made compatible via DOS BOX ) ?
Intel graphics is not as versatile as dedicated Nvidia or AMD cards.
