Windows 10 Disk Management

Hi,

I have a low space condition on Windows 10 drive C:

I migrated drive C: from the original disk to a SSD drive so I am not sure if these were the original partitions, sizes, etc. or not.

This drive has 4 partitions which are:

  1. 200MB Healthy (EFI System Partition) 100% free space
  2. OS: (C:) 905.24 GB NTFS Healthy (Boot, Page File, Crash Dump, Primary Partition)        2% free space
  3. 971 MB NTFS Healthy (OEM Partition) 41% free space
  4. Recovery 25.01 GB NTFS Healthy (Primary Partition) 65% free space.

Can any of these partitions be deleted or resized to make more operating room on drive C: ?

Are there any other viable options for more space? I have a SSD for Drive D: and have previously moved all documents, pictures, etc. over to Drive D: which is 70% free, but still have almost a full drive C:

Thanks,

Roger

    Hi Roger

Please Note it is not healthy for your rive to have it completely full, you will shorten the lifespan of your hard drive, disk access will be slow and Windows performance will most likely suffer . ..

That 25.1GB Recovery partition can be removed, that is the manufacturers Recovery Partition which is used to restore your system to Factory Specs

Most likely you don't need that any more . ..

Windows Will refuse to merge the C drive with that partition when you delete it, because they are not side by side, you will need to use a 3rd party utility to merge those partitions - the Free version of AOMEI Partition Assistant is fully featured and very capable:

    Hi RogerSwofford,

I'm Stefano an Independent Advisor, here to help you.

First of all I suggest you to perform a disk clean up:

    1. Open "File Explorer"
    2. Click on "This PC"
    3. Right click on "C:"
    4. Click on "Proprieties"
    5. Click on "Clean-up disk"
    6. Click on "Clean up system files"
    7. Select every option in the list, but not "Download"
    8. Click on "OK"

Then reboot and see if the free space now is bigger than before.

What does "migrated drive C:" mean?

    Hi RogerSwofford

I am Vijay, an Independent Advisor. I am here to work with you on this problem.

You can execute following to gain space on your computer

    1. Use Storage Sense to delete unnecessary files

Type Storage in Cortana Search Box > Click Storage > Click Change how we free up space > Down below there is button Clean now under Free up space now which you should press

    1. Use Disk Cleanup

Type Disk Cleanup in Cortana Search box > Click Disk Cleanup > Check relevant options (you can also clean system files)

    1. Analyze disk space

You should analyze your existing space with help of third party softwares and remove un-necessary files. TreeSize is most popular one and is a Microsoft Store app.

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/treesize-free...

    1. Check for log files in CBS directory

Go to C:\Windows\Logs\CBS > Check the size of CBS.Log and if size is huge >

Type services in Windows Start Search box > Click Services > Scroll down to find the Windows Modules Installer service and double-click on it > Set its startup type to Manual > Reboot your computer

Go to C:\Windows\Logs\CBS > Delete all of the files in the CBS folder (or rename and move to a backup drive) > Reboot your computer > Then go back into the Services App and set Windows Modules Installer Service back to Automatic Startup (Note CBS log files contain information about windows update.

    1. Microsoft has also some suggestions to improve disk space.
