Every time my computer tries to download and install the new Windows 11 update, the download seems to take hours and hours to try to download and gets to, maybe 60% before it shuts down. Does anyone have a solution for me?

I have attempted to download the update numerous times, but with the same result.

Finally, I got fed up and just delayed the downloads until I can find an answer.....

Thank you for letting me know.

Version 24H2 does have a slow download issue, I’ve noticed this while setting up PCs.

I suggest waiting for it to download completely and closing all open apps. It may take some time since it's essentially installing a new version. That shouldn’t be the case, though, as I remember upgrading from 22H2 to 23H2 didn’t have this slow download experience.

If you continue to have download issues, I suggest performing an in-place upgrade with the option to keep files and apps:

    > Download the Windows 11 Installation Assistant from the official Microsoft website: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-downlo...

    > Open the tool and follow the on-screen instructions to upgrade your PC.

    > Make sure to choose the option to Keep personal files and apps.

    > Ensure your device stays plugged in and connected to the internet during the process.

For more detailed guidance, you can also refer to: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/for...

This should resolve the issue and get your system updated to the latest supported version. If you need further assistance, feel free to reach out.

I really hope this information is helpful! :)

    Yes, it showed version 24H2.

I normally turn my 3rd party firewall off when updates are ready to download and install. That hasn't worked.

I tried the troubleshooter, as suggested. Although it said that it found and issue and that the issue was corrected, the update still won't download. It remains at 0%.

I did read in the help app that something in my computer may not be compatible with something in the new update, but that they were working on patches to try to fix the issue.

Should I just wait and try it in a week or so?

Thank you for letting me know.

Was version 24H2 showing in the update queue instead?

In the meantime, if you haven’t already, first, make sure there's no third-party antivirus software active that might be interfering with the update process:

    > Open the Windows Security app.

    > Click the "Settings" (gear icon) in the lower left.

    > Under Security Providers, click "Manage Providers".

    > Verify if Microsoft Defender Antivirus is the active antivirus and Windows Firewall is the firewall.

    > If not, please uninstall the third-party antivirus, restart your PC, and check again at Settings > Windows Update.

If the issue persists, please run the Windows Update Troubleshooter from the Get Help app:

    > Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.

Find Windows Update and click Run. This will open the Get Help app.

    > Select "I can't download, install, or uninstall an update" and click "Yes".

    > This will automatically identify and address any errors and restart the update process. This step is purely automatic.

    > Please continue to follow the prompt if the issue persists.

If the issue persists, please provide more details by answering my questions.

    Hi John, thanks for responding.

I don't know what a "KB" number is, but the install is called Windows 11, version 24H2.

I can't send you a screenshot of any errors, because there were none. The download simply froze and it took about 10 hours just to get to 60%.

I am not really aware of any troubleshooting options available, so any help you can provide would be appreciated.

Hi, I'm John! I will help you with this.

May I know what troubleshooting steps you have already taken? This will help me avoid recommending them again.

Also, if possible, could you provide the KB number related to the update that's causing the issue? A screenshot of the error would also be really helpful if you're able to attach it in your next response.

Click "Reply" below to let me know.

    Regards,

    John J.D.
