Excel / Word mouse selection problems

Beginning about a month ago I began having problems selecting multiple cells in excel by selecting and dragging my mouse. Cant highlight multiple rows either. Same problem selecting items in word.  VERY frustrating.

    Hello John,

    Based on the information you provided, it may be caused by the add-ins on the said applications. For us to further isolate the concern, we suggest that you run the apps through Safe Mode. Press Windows key + R > type excel /safe and winword /safe. You can also disable the add-ins. Kindly check out this article for the steps on how to disable the add-ins on both applications.

    OK, I feel very foolish.  The one thing I didn't try is a new mouse.

    Apparently the problem was with the mouse itself. I plugged in an old one I had laying around and my problem was solved.  Sorry to have bothered you.
