Powerpoint org chart - avoid automatic shape resizing when deleting elements?

I'm working with an existing org chart in Powerpoint, and need to delete a couple of boxes (removing people).  Right now this resizes all of the other boxes, such that they no longer align with the background graphics.  Is there any way to avoid this behavior, or will I need to manually resize all of the shapes?  Thanks!

You can right-click on the border of a piece of SmartArt and choose Convert to Shapes. Then the shapes will stay constant sizes. This is a one-way trip, you can't turn it back into SmartArt later.

If you delete it will always resize. One possibility is to select the shapes to "Delete" and delete text and set fill and line to none.
