Word 2016: Insert Footnote button immediately adds random numbers vertically oriented at page top

This is bizarre. I have a document with one footnote, and noticed at the top there are five numeral 5 characters vertically oriented at top left of the page (independent of the header). See attached image.

How can I fix this?

    The document is sensitive so I cannot do that. 

    When I'm at my work computer I'll create a new document to replicate the problem, then share that file.
