Multiple references to same footnote

In my article footnote number 10 will be referred to several times throughout the article. I have used the Insert tab>Cross-reference>Footnote and Footnote number sequence to add a subsequent reference in later text to refer back to that original footnote #10. However if I then have to revise and insert a new footnote BEFORE the original note 10, note 10 will update to note 11 but the second use of that same footnote does NOT update to 11. Is there a way to do this in Word? It is too difficult and tedious to have to find all of those subsequent #10s that did not update.

Cross-references don't update dynamically the way footnote numbers do, but they will update automatically when fields are updated. The easiest way to update all the fields in the document is to switch to Print Preview and back.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I had lost DAYS trying to figure this out. And of course it is a bizarre, too simple for words solution that can’t be found anywhere. Never expecting a reply I am doubly delighted to see your response the very next morning.

Thank you also for your use of “dynamic updating”. So much more succinct than my tedious paragraph long description.
