Multiple Multilevel Lists in Same Document

I am creating a series of templates that require two different multilevel lists, after establishing the first list and ensuring that it works, I cannot get the second list to work properly. For example, I have one multilevel list that looks like this:

Chapter 1

1-1.

a.

(1)

(a)

This list works fine, but I also need a list that replaces "chapter" with "Appendix," so the list would look like this:

Appendix A

A-1

a.

(1)

(a)

At first I could not get this list to work the way I needed, instead of going A-1 to A-2 it was going A-1 to B-1. Eventually I was able to fix that problem, but now I cannot see the list level I am working at until I start typing which is frustrating and confusing. Word seems to be resisting having two multilevel lists that are so similar in one document, any advice on how I can get both lists working properly?

See also her supplementary page: How to number headings and figures in Appendixes in Microsoft Word by Shauna Kelly. It depends on setting up the list in the way given in the link that John provided.

The secret is to use Shauna Kelly's method for creating outline numbering styles. Please note that while her page shows outline numbering created with the default heading styles, you can actually use any set of styles to create an outline numbered set. I've created templates with 5 independent numbering sets and they all worked reliably.
