Excel object in Visio incorrect interaction

I've followed the instructions to to embed an table in Visio:

Embed an Excel worksheet

  1. Select Insert > Object.
  2. Select Microsoft Excel Worksheet, and select OK.
  3. Double-click a cell and enter data.
  4. To adjust column widths, select the columns and then select Home > Format > AutoFit Column Width.

I want to remove empty columns and rows following this procedure:

Remove empty columns and rows from an embedded Excel table

  1. Double-click the table.
  2. Drag the resize handles to hide empty rows and columns.

But when I try and double click on the table, it pulls up the excel application rather than the embedded table; I have no 'handles' available to resize the table. Do I have a setting on that is doing this? How can I properly remove empty columns and rows? It seemed to be working like this up till today (10-14-2021) for me?

Thank you,

Trevor

I received a workaround from the Microsoft team:

  1. Go to excel. File->Options->General->when using multiple displays.
  2. Set it to 'Optimize for compatibility'.

This has fixed the issue for me.

May be this video can help ?

    https://youtu.be/PUovDAMMYj8

    Sorry for my terrible English

Thank you for posting the video, and I do understand that is a viable workaround for some. However, we have anywhere between 5 and 10 embedded Excel table already existing in literally thousands of VISIO files that we use, re-use over and over. In our scenario, and I assume many other companies as well, your workaround is not viable since we cannot have an Excel file for each and every VISIO file that has 5 embedded Excel tables in it. That is not sustainable.

We would like to find out the permanent solution to get back to what we have had for literally 15 years of VISIO work. I know that is not your fault and issue and that you are trying to help, that is understood and we appreciate that. We need VISIO technical support to show up on this issue but there has been no response for weeks now.

Just now I understand what you mean as "embedded table editor"!

I find it on my old notebooks with Visio 2003/Office 2003 and Visio 2016/Office 2016. There i can see this frame around embedded Excel.

At my work notebook I use Visio 2019 Professional, i also have same issue.

    Hi Trevor Seidel,

As per your description, it seems you are Embed Excel Table in Visio.

Based on my test result, I also meet same behavior (double click on the table, it pulls up the excel application rather than the embedded table) when I embedded the Excel table into Visio via you mentioned above steps or Insert**> Object**>in Insert Object dialog box, click Create from file, and then **** Browse the file.

Since, I also meet same behavior as like you described above, in this scenario we requested you please send/provide the feedback via Microsoft Visio app, to related development team so that they can get notice about it. It’s the best way to report to related team and we are sure it will speed up this process. Your advice is very important to us. Refer to this article: How do I give feedback on Microsoft Office?

Regarding to**, “How can I properly remove empty columns and rows“** Embed Excel Table in Visio, as a temporary workaround we  need to double click on table and Excel sheet will open separately then there we can remove **** empty columns and rows and it will also updates in your Visio table as well.

I appreciate your understanding and stay safe!!

    Best Regards

    Waqas Muhammad
