I get the error, "We couldn't authenticate with the credentials provided. Please try again"

    Hi Carolyn Rainaud:

Based on your description, we understand that you met the error message that Couldn't authenticate credentials.

In our test here, we did not encounter the same problem. The following are my test steps:

    1. Navigate to your SharePoint location using a browser. Right-click the file you want to use, and select Open in Excel.
    2. In Excel, select File > Info, and then select the Copy path button.
    3. To use the link you just copied in Power Query, take the following steps: Select Get Data > Web.
    4. In the From Web dialog box, select the Basic option and paste the link in URL.
    5. Remove the ?web=1 string at the end of the link so that Power Query can properly navigate to your file, and then select OK.

You can try my steps to see if this problem still occurs.

If the problem persists, it's recommended to clear existing permissions to have a check via going to :

Data > Get Data > Data Source Settings > Global permissions > click “Clear all permissions to remove all permissions”. Then try to connect to this web content again.

    Hope this will help you.

    Tin

    Hi Carolyn Rainaud:

I'm sorry that my suggestion didn't help you.

I understand this has caused you great inconvenience. However, I am afraid that there may be no ways recovering your data from our side.

If you want to take the issue a step further, we kindly recommended you can raise a service request in Microsoft 365 admin center, which the support there has the related permission and resource to help you check from the backend and see whether can help you.

    Best regards,

    Tin

    Good Morning Tin,

I followed your instructions and I’m still running into the same problem.  Except now I get a blank window with only a partial display of the error message:

I am admin in another company with Office 365 where I set up their SharePoint site.  I tried testing there to create a data connection from Excel to SP and run into the same error.

I have also tried clearing permissions multiple times and it has not helped.

    Please advise.  Thank you.

    Carolyn Rainaud
