Hey, thanks for the quick response.

    Answering below:

Thank you for responding back here.

    • It looks like you're on a Windows 7 computer correct me if I'm wrong. Yes I have Windows 7
    • How do you open Notebooks in OneNote 2016? Did you select OneDrive personal or OneDrive for Business to sign in with your university account?

NOTE** You must be signed in as business account and not the personal one since you're using a university account**

I logged in as business account, didn't help

You may try clearing OneNote Cache.

Clearing the app cache and deleting all the temporary files stored in the cache folder may help you fix the issue.

    1. Navigate toC:\Users\UserName\AppData\Local\Microsoft\OneNote\15.0 I have version 16.0
    2. Then locate theOneNoteOfflineCache.onecache file.
    3. Right-click on it and rename it toOneNoteOfflineCache.onecache.old.
    4. Close and restart OneNote and check if you can access the problematic file location now. Didn't find the file.. maybe because I uninstalled and reinstalled Onenote?

    Repair Office

    Didn't help

Check If You Can Open the .ONETOC2 File

    Had tried, got this error:

    Tweak Your Registry Settings

    1. Launch the Registry Editor, and navigate to Did not understand exactly what should I suppose to do
    2. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Common\Identity .
    3. Then right-click in the right-hand pane and create a new DisableADALatopWAMOverride DWORD.
    4. Double-click on it and change its value from zero to one (DWORD:00000001).

    Image

I would be glad to hear other suggestions,

Thank you so much for your help,

    Roni

    Hello Roni Gatenggo,

Thank you for responding back here.

    • It looks like you're on a Windows 7 computer correct me if I'm wrong.
    • How do you open Notebooks in OneNote 2016? Did you select OneDrive personal or OneDrive for Business to sign in with your university account?

NOTE** You must be signed in as business account and not the personal one since you're using a university account**

You may try clearing OneNote Cache.

Clearing the app cache and deleting all the temporary files stored in the cache folder may help you fix the issue.

    1. Navigate toC:\Users\UserName\AppData\Local\Microsoft\OneNote\15.0
    2. Then locate theOneNoteOfflineCache.onecache file.
    3. Right-click on it and rename it toOneNoteOfflineCache.onecache.old.
    4. Close and restart OneNote and check if you can access the problematic file location now.

    Repair Office

    1. Launch the Control Panel and navigate to Programs.
    2. Then select Programs and features, and click on Office 365 or OneNote 2016.
    3. Hit the Change button and select the Quick Repair option.
    4. Restart OneNote and check if the location error is history now.

Check If You Can Open the .ONETOC2 File

Several users confirmed they solved the problem by opening the .onetoc2 version of the problematic file. As a quick reminder, the .ONETOC2 file is actually a table of contents file that OneNote generates to better organize your notes. It’s usually located under C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\OneNote .

    Tweak Your Registry Settings

    1. Launch the Registry Editor, and navigate to
    2. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Common\Identity .
    3. Then right-click in the right-hand pane and create a new DisableADALatopWAMOverride DWORD.
    4. Double-click on it and change its value from zero to one (DWORD:00000001).

To sum up, if you want to fix the annoying OneNote error “We couldn’t open a notebook or that location,” clear the cache, update the app, and repair Office. Alternatively, check if you can open the .ONETOC2 file and access the content of the problematic file.

We look forward to your response on the results. If you have other clarifications about this matter, you can get back to us by replying to this post so that I can provide you additional troubleshooting steps.
