OneNote - Unsupported Browser error

Question

Hi Folks,

Getting this weird error in OneNote for Windows 10 application (NOT the web version or App).

When I insert a file and choose the 'upload to OneDrive and insert link' option, I get this error:

I've no idea why it's giving this error when I'm using the full OneNote version (not the web version etc.).

Anyone have any ideas?

PS, I've tested this on 3 other users and all having the same issue (this previously worked fine for us).

I've tested on multiple devices and same issue.

I've fully updated Chrome and Edge (and toggled between these as the 'default' browsers for the device) which made no difference.

This issue cropped up on a school (staff account). I've replicated the error on and off the school network and also between personal and 'work' accounts (also on a personal account on a personal device).

Seems like a fault to me.

* Have tried on Windows 11 and Windows 10.

The constant is the version of OneNote. (OneNote for windows 10)

*** Just to note. As a test, I did try this method with the online version. It just errors (gives no reason for the error).

We are not using the browser.

As mentioned in my first post, we are using the full application "OneNote for windows 10".

I've found a (very clunky) solution. To upload the file so that its embeded you either have to use the web app or the OneNote for Windows 10 app.

To actually view the embedded file, you either have to use the web app or OneNote (the one that comes with Office 365, which I'll refer to as OneNote 365 from here) and not the "for Windows 10" version.

OneNote for windows 10:

Even clunkier is the fact that you can't put these embedded files into OneNote 365. There's no option to upload and link the file in the 365 version, and pasting the link from the web just keeps it as a hyperlink without embedding the file. So as of right now, if you want to use an embedded file in OneNote without using the web app, you must place the file in through OneNote Win 10 but view the file through OneNote 365.

I hear you. We are a school also. Every class from year 5 to A-Level has a class set with their own OneNote for each class (we have 1000's).

We (IT) are testing the app version out.

Currently it requires some bolt on (additional 'extensions') to make it function like the window 10 version. We needed the extensions to allow page distributions, which to me is fundamental and seems absolutely crazy that it's not baked in the app...

Another odd thing we noticed is that my colleague is able to arrange the app to look very similar to the windows 10 version where as mine is missing these options. Upon looking into it, it looks like Microsoft are slowly rolling these functions out and aren't available to all users. Again, crazy from Microsoft that they discontinue support for one product before the next one is fully out there....

If i were you, I would do some testing on the new version. There are some good guides on youtube on how to make it look like version 10 and then download to extensions to get it working right.

Also, just to note, although there is the 'unsupported browser' message shown in the Windows 10 OneNote, there is a hyperlink above it that will take people to the document etc.

Not ideal at all, but it's a work around until you move over. I wouldn't hold your breath on Microsoft fixing anything for the Windows 10 version if I were you. They are notorious for allowing stuff to fall down which forces a move.

Update on this.

Looks like OneNote uses IE to render the previews (****!)

As it's so old and SharePoint doesn't even support IE, I'm guessing that's their issue.

One thing we have noticed is if you insert the file, it will error. If you then click on another section of OneNote and back again, it will now display. Very odd!
