Hyperlinked INDEX

Question

I have just learnt how to create an INDEX in Word. It shows up properly. However, the displayed page numbers are not linked to inside page numbers. I want to jump to the displayed page number when I click the page number in the INDEX.

Is it possible?

For example, if an entry in INDEX is displayed as

Entry, 50,100

then, if I click 50, I should jump to page 50 inside the document.

Is it possible? If yes, how?

Word does not support creating a hyperlinked index, unfortunately. You may be able to find some third-party tool that can do it for you.

Not that I'm aware of. More than that, I can't imagine how such a software would work with Word. The problem is that the index is the result of a single INDEX field. If you create a hyperlink within the field's result, it would work only until the next time you update the field -- the update would instantly remove any hyperlinks because they aren't part of the field's code. The only way to prevent that is to unlink the completed index field so that it's plain text, and then insert the hyperlinks. The unlinking is a one-way process; the index field can't be reconstructed from the plain text.
