Upgrade to Microsoft Edge to take advantage of the latest features, security updates, and technical support.
My Dell Inspiron shut itself down this evening and on restarting requested my Bitlocker Recovery Key. I followed the instructions to find the key through my Microsoft account. However I was then prompted for my security information, and it was going to send a recovery code to an email address I no longer have. I updated the security information, and got an email to say this will happen in 30 days. However, now when I log in to my Microsoft Account, I can no longer access the area where I would find the Bitlocker Recovery Key, until the 30 days has passed and my security information is updated.
I spoke with the MS Live Support although it wasn't much help. They said I would just need to wait until the 30 days were up or do a clean installation (which I would prefer to avoid if possible).
Is there any way for me to access the Bitlocker Recovery Key in the meantime? If I just turn the laptop off and wait the 30 days, will I get the prompt to enter the key again? Any help would be much appreciated!

Hi Kirsty Black,
Welcome to Microsoft Q&A!
I'm sorry to hear you’re in such a tough spot — BitLocker recovery keys are tied to your Microsoft account, and the pending security info change is blocking it. I understand how stressful it can be to lose access to your laptop, it's totally reasonable to want the process to be quicker.
Unfortunately, Microsoft has a strict security system designed to prevent unauthorized access, making the (30-day) hold period is enforced with no shortenings. They do not offer exceptions for individual users, and support agents are also not permitted to bypass this hold or manually reset passwords!
So, I know this is not good news, but I think it's better to be direct: there are not many things you can do besides waiting the rest of the security update period. If the BitLocker key is previously saved to your account, then there's nothing to worry about. Once the new information is active, you should be able to restart the laptop and enter your BitLocker recovery key.
Notes:
- After getting your BitLocker Key, download and save it in multiple locations for future safety.
- You can also turn this feature off later if you don't like it.
There is no official way to bypass BitLocker without the recovery key as it's designed to protect your data. In the unfortunate case that the key is not saved anywhere and not in your Microsoft account, the only option after the waiting period would be to reinstall Windows, which wipes the drive. Please let us know if you have any other questions or need further assistance. Thank you!
