Remove payment method / Close billing profile

“I have an accidental tenant google076.onmicrosoft.com with a P2 trial license. I removed my main credit card and added a temporary card as default, but the portal won’t allow me to remove it or close the billing profile. I need the billing profile closed and all payment methods detached so I can delete this tenant. No subscriptions exist, it’s only a P2 trial.”

Hey there, srikanth saripilli

When you have a subscription that is tied to a payment method, you will not be able to remove that payment method unless that subscription has been canceled.

If you no longer want the subscription, please can you sign into the Azure portal here: https://portal.azure.com

Once you have signed into the portal, please can you click onto 'Cost Management' (You may need to search for this in the search bar above).

You will be able to see what subscriptions are active when the cost management & billing overview page opens. You will want to click onto 'Subscriptions' under 'Billing'

This will bring you to a page where you can see all subscriptions on your account. On the subscriptions you no longer want, please click onto the subscription name. This will take you to the subscription page to view its details.

At the top, you will be able to cancel the subscription by clicking onto 'Cancel subscription'

You will need to follow the instructions to cancel the subscription. Once the subscription has been canceled, it will take around three days before the payment method can be removed.

They are inactive and i was able to disable but can't cancel but i got the mail as its cancelled but i can still see its active and unable to delete the payment method. Please let me know how to proceed.

What subscription still shows as active when you go to your payment methods in the Cost Management on the Azure portal?

You should be able to click onto the subscription link, and it will take you to the subscription.

Hi Nathan,

I am unable to remove my payment method even i disable my P2 Entra ID subscription but not cancelled. Yes i got mail reply that they have cancelled my subscription but i am unable to delete payment method or tenant right now.

I have disable the subscription from admin center but unable to remove payment method.

Thanks for the images. The second image explains why you are unable to remove the payment method from your account.

When you have an Entra Free licence, even though it is free, you are unable to remove your payment method. You would need to delete the tenant.

I know this seems strange, considering it is a free subscription. However, this is how it has been set up on Microsoft's side. I suspect this is so that, if you wanted to, you could easily upgrade your subscription.

You shouldn't get charged unless you sign up for a subscription or use an Azure service. It will tell you if you are about to be charged, and what your projected costs are. If others have access to your tenant, you can remove the permissions for them to purchase anything on the tenant. You will just need to make sure they do not have billing permissions.

Thanks for the reply. while adding p2 license it created new directory as i gave incorrect domain so i want to delete this subscription,billing profile so that i can use that credit card/payment methos for the directory i want to use. Can i get customer support to delete this payment method or should i wait untils 30 days or completed. If the delete my actual directory where i want to add p2 lincense will this directory/tenant gets deleted so that i can create new Azure account freshly.

I am unsure if support can remove a payment method. I suspect they could, as they have the tools to do this. You can try raising a support request here: https://portal.azure.com/#blade/Microsoft_Azure_Support/HelpAndSupportBlade

Waiting until the P2 trial ends would work, then removing the tenant and starting fresh would remove the payment method. However, doing this will delete any resources on your tenant. Maybe try support first, to see what they can do.
