Update Loop problems

I have windows 11 professional on one of my computers. It is currently stuck in an update loop. The update reboots the system and gets to about 30% and then reboots again. This has been going on for 5 days.

I have tried all your suggestions to no avail. I was unable to boot into safe mode and recovery options didn't work either.

From the command prompt, I tried to scan the disc or use the DISM command. Neither were accepted.

By the way it lists the disc as X:\ instead of my usual C drive. When I attempted to reset completely with my recovery drive, it couldn't find the drive.

Prior to this occasion, I have had no difficulty with this machine.

Hi, I understand how much of a hassle this can be when your PC keeps looping through updates.

This usually happens because the update files didn’t install correctly, often due to corrupted components, a driver conflict, or not enough space on the system drive.

Let’s start with a few quick checks: first, can you confirm if your C: drive has at least 20 GB free?

Next, try booting into Safe Mode and clearing the pending update files by renaming the SoftwareDistribution and Catroot2 folders, this often breaks the loop.

After that, run sfc /scannow and DISM /RestoreHealth to repair any system issues.

If the loop continues, we might need to manually install the latest update or use a repair tool.

Do you know if any recent hardware changes or third-party antivirus are running on that machine?

This happened to me!! My solution was fully powering off my device mid update (WHICH I DO NOT RECOMMEND). It fixed it but I was then stuck on an error screen until I could successfully boot it into safemode where I was able to fully reset and wipe my laptop and gain access to it again. Again, i DO NOT recommend this as it fully broke certain features on my laptop (Wiped my copy of Windows 11 and troubleshooting does not work and I have to buy a new copy of Windows 11 or else I get a pop up asking me to activate windows every 2 hours, video does not play on any browser or app except for youtube on google browsers, on bing, and a specific media player app, I cannot personalise my PC because of my “lack of Windows activation”), but it does work as a last resort. Like you, I had had no problems with my laptop before this and it was completely out of the blue. I still occasionally get these update loops on my laptop, but they seem to end after about five loops of the update!
