Security Problem

A while ago I got an email to say someone wants an authentication code and if it wasn't me to ignore it which I did as it wasn't me. Now when I try to log in to my Microsoft account which I have forgotten the password it says it will send the details to an email address which is not mine. I don't want to ask for a verification code as it will go to whoever has set that email up and he will have access to my account. How do I get round this as my account is now locked as I've tried several passwords which I thought it might have been?

Thank you for letting me know.

I suggest resetting password and choosing "I don’t have any of these" option.

To reset your password, please follow these steps:

    • Go to the Microsoft account recovery page: https://account.live.com/password/reset
    • Select "I forgot my password", then click Next.
    • Enter the email address or phone number linked to your Microsoft account and follow the on-screen instructions.
    • If you don’t have access to any of the recovery options listed, click on “I don’t have any of these” and fill out the form as accurately as possible. Microsoft uses that information to verify your identity.

If issue still persists, have you had a chance to try the Microsoft Account Recovery form yet?

That’s currently the only official way to recover your account. It lets you prove your identity by answering questions about your account. You can try it up to twice a day:

Hi, I'm John! I will help you with this.

It’s possible that someone gained access to your Microsoft account in the past and changed the security details, which is why the recovery email no longer belongs to you.

Are you seeing the full email address, or is it partially masked (for example: j***@outlook.com)?

Are you able to sign in at all, or does it immediately block you after entering the password?

Click "Add comment" to let me know.

    Regards,

    John J.D.
