Trying to install updates to Windows but Windows Update states "We'll try to download this update once you're connected to the internet." I am connected to the internet.

I've tried running Windows Update Troubleshooter but it will not run.

Hi. I'm David, and I'm happy to help you.

    Please clarify the following:

    • Do you have a third-party antivirus installed? If yes, which one?
    • Do you have any VPN software installed? (Even if it's not running at the moment) If yes, which one?

Also. What is the current "OS Build" of your Windows 11?

    • Press "Windows + R", type winver, and click OK.

If you prefer, share a screenshot. Use the shortcut "Windows + Shift + S" to use the screenshot tool.

Be sure to censor your email address if it appears. The Microsoft Q&A is public.

    I await your reply.

If Windows Update is stating that it will try to download updates once you're connected to the internet, but you are already connected, there are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot this issue:

    1. Check Internet Connection: Ensure that your internet connection is stable and functioning properly. You can try browsing the web to confirm.
    2. Run Windows Update Troubleshooter: Since you mentioned that the troubleshooter will not run, you may need to troubleshoot the troubleshooter itself. You can try running the following command in an elevated Command Prompt:
         msdt.exe /id WindowsUpdate

This command attempts to launch the Windows Update troubleshooter directly.
    3. Reset Windows Update Components: Sometimes, resetting the Windows Update components can resolve issues. You can do this by running the following commands in an elevated Command Prompt:
         net stop wuauserv
         net stop cryptSvc
         net stop bits
         net stop msiserver
         net start wuauserv
         net start cryptSvc
         net start bits
         net start msiserver

    4. Check for Corrupted Files: You can also run the System File Checker to check for and repair corrupted system files. Use the following command in an elevated Command Prompt:
         sfc /scannow

    5. Check Proxy Settings: If you are using a proxy server, ensure that it is configured correctly. You can check your proxy settings in Internet Explorer and ensure they match the settings in WinHTTP. Use the command:
         netsh winhttp import proxy source=ie

    6. Restart Your Computer: If you haven't already, restart your computer to ensure that any pending updates or changes take effect.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, you may need to look into more advanced troubleshooting or consider reaching out to Microsoft Support for further assistance.
