Help with passkeys

Question

When logging in to websites, I'm often "asked" by Windows Security to use a passkey:

Choose a passkey

iPhone, iPad, or Android device

Security key

Cancel

I usually just hit CANCEL and log in with my password. I don't particularly want to have to pick up my telephone to log in with a passkey every time. How do I create and save a passkey to my PC?

tried to go to Microsoft.com/account to create a passkey. Got: We couldn't create your passkey

A passkey already exists on the device you're trying to save to. How do I remedy this? Windows doesn't appear to be USING the passkey already present.

To create and save a passkey on your PC, follow these steps:

1. Navigate to Security Info: Open your browser and go to Security info.
2. Add Sign-in Method: Tap Add sign-in method and choose Passkey.
3. Sign In with MFA: You may need to sign in using multifactor authentication (MFA) before you can add a passkey. Tap Next after signing in.
4. Choose Where to Save Your Passkey: You will be prompted to select where you want to save your passkey. The options may vary based on your browser and operating system. If your device supports passkeys, you can save it directly to your device or choose another method.
5. Complete Registration: If you have a security key, follow the prompts to connect it and provide your PIN or biometric method. After completing these steps, you will be redirected to the My Security info screen, where you can finalize the registration.

Once registered, you can use this passkey for easier sign-ins without needing to pick up your phone each time.
