Microsoft Office applications keep crashing

I recently backed up a lot of my Microsoft Office files on to OneDrive and I've been having problems with the applications ever since.

I can open the applications and use them just fine, but after a period they fail to respond and crash.

I have tried all the recommended steps (restarting, checking for updates, uninstalling and then reinstalling, repairing) but nothing seems to be working.

When my Onenote crashes an error message appears saying 'The exception unknown software exception (0xe0000002) occurred in the application at location 0x00007FFBC7E5A80A.'

Has anyone experienced this?

It sounds like you're experiencing issues with Microsoft Office applications crashing, particularly OneNote. The error message you mentioned, 'The exception unknown software exception (0xe0000002)', can be indicative of several underlying issues, including potential conflicts with add-ins or graphics drivers.

Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot the problem:

  1. Disable Hardware Acceleration: Sometimes, hardware acceleration can cause Office applications to become unresponsive. You can disable it by following these steps:
    • Open any Office application.
    • Go to File > Options.
    • In the Advanced pane, check the box for Disable hardware graphics acceleration.
    • Click OK to save your changes.
  2. Check for Graphics Driver Issues: If you have an Intel graphics adapter, ensure that you are using an updated driver. Certain versions of Intel graphics drivers have been known to cause issues with Office applications. The recommended driver version is 26.20.100.7262 or later. You can check your driver version in the Device Manager under Display adapters.
  3. Update Office: Make sure your Office installation is up to date. Microsoft has released fixes for various issues in newer versions of Office. You can check for updates in any Office application by going to File > Account > Update Options > Update Now.
  4. Check for Conflicting Add-ins: Sometimes, third-party add-ins can cause crashes. You can try starting Office in safe mode to see if the issue persists. To do this, hold down the Ctrl key while opening the application, or run excel /safe (or the respective application name) from the Run dialog.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, you may want to consider reaching out to Microsoft Support for further assistance.
