I have a laptop with built in AI features (Dell XPS 14 9440). Recently Copilot has been repeatedly crashing, I'll launch the app and then it will crash while I am typing out my question or when I send my question. It will just display a page that says an error was encountered and that It might be a temporary issue or I can retry. It's been about a week and I'm still having this issue. How do I get copilot working again?

    Hi Dillon Sanford,

Thanks for reaching out. I understand how disruptive it can be when Copilot closes unexpectedly, especially while you’re in the middle of typing or sending a prompt.

In addition to Q&A Assist's answer, here are some recommended steps that you can try to restore Copilot:

1, Run the Copilot connectivity troubleshooter

    • Open the Get Help app in Windows
    • Search for Copilot connectivity troubleshooter
    • Run it and follow the on-screen guidance

    2, Reset the Copilot app

    • Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps
    • Select Copilot > Advanced options
    • Choose Repair first
    • If the issue continues, return and select Reset

    3, Install all Windows updates

    • Open Settings > Windows Update
    • Select Check for updates
    • Install all available updates and restart the device

4, Use Copilot in the browser as a temporary workaround

I appreciate you taking the time to work through these steps. Let me know if you need further assistance, feel free to ask me by clicking "Add Comment" or "Add Answer" if you cannot add comment so your response will be visible. Thanks for your effort.

Copilot on Windows is installed and updated as an app, so repeated crashes are typically resolved by removing and reinstalling the Copilot app.

    Use these steps:

    1. Uninstall Copilot
      • On Windows 11: Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
      • Search for Copilot.
      • Select the menu next to Copilot, then choose Uninstall and complete the removal.
    2. (Optional, advanced) Remove via PowerShell
      • For advanced scenarios, a PowerShell script can be used to remove or prevent installation of the Copilot app. See the sample script in Remove the Copilot app in the Copilot management documentation referenced below.
    3. Reinstall Copilot
      • Open the Microsoft Store app.
      • Search for Copilot.
      • Install the Copilot app again from the Store.

After reinstalling, launch Copilot and test again. If crashes persist even after a clean reinstall, collect details (Windows version, device model, when the crash occurs, and any error text) and contact Microsoft Support from the Copilot or Windows feedback/support channels.
