Using Classic Outlook on Windows for personal email, calendar, and contact management
The most common cause is that Outlook was switched into offline mode accidentally or lost connection briefly and didn’t recover. Go to the Send/Receive tab and click “Work Offline” once. Even if it doesn’t look selected, click it to force Outlook to try reconnecting. Watch the status bar at the bottom to see if it changes.
If it doesn’t reconnect, Outlook may be stuck in a disconnected state. Close Outlook completely and reopen it. If that doesn’t fix it, restart your computer to reset the network and Outlook’s connection.
Another frequent cause is a temporary network hiccup. Even if your internet seems fine, Outlook may not have reconnected to the mail server. Switching networks, turning Wi-Fi off and back on, or plugging/unplugging Ethernet can nudge it back online.
If you’re on a work account, being off VPN can trigger this even if everything worked earlier. Reconnecting to VPN often restores the connection immediately.
If none of that changes the status, then it’s likely a transient issue with Outlook’s connection cache rather than your account itself, and restarting Outlook or the machine usually clears it.
