To stop an admin account from being usable on a specific Windows 11 PC, either remove that account from the device or switch the device to use a different account. Removing the account from the PC does not delete the Microsoft account itself; it only removes its sign-in and local data from that device.
Below are the main options, depending on what kind of account it is and what is needed.
1. Remove an admin user account from the PC (recommended)
Use this when the admin account is an extra account on the device (for example, a work/school or secondary Microsoft account) and it should no longer be usable on this PC.
- Sign in to Windows with another account that has administrator rights on this PC.
- Open Settings.
- Go to Accounts.
- Select Other users (or use the shortcut link: Other Users –
ms-settings:otherusers).
- Under Other users, find the account to remove.
- Select the flyout for that account.
- Select Remove next to Account and data.
- Confirm the removal.
Result:
- The selected admin account is removed from this PC.
- Its profile, local files under that user profile, and sign-in capability on this device are removed.
- The underlying Microsoft or work/school account still exists online; it just cannot be used on this PC unless added again.
2. Disconnect a work or school account from the device
If the admin account is a work or school account connected to the PC (for example, from a previous organization), disconnect it so it can no longer manage or sign in on this device.
- Open Settings.
- Go to Accounts.
- Select Access work or school (briefcase icon).
- Select the dropdown for the work or school account.
- Choose Disconnect.
- Confirm when prompted.
Result:
- The work/school account is disconnected from this PC.
- Organizational policies and access tied to that account are removed from the device.
- The account itself is not deleted; it just no longer has a relationship with this PC.
3. If this admin account is currently the only/main sign-in
If the admin account being removed is the only account on the PC, first create another local or Microsoft account with admin rights, sign in with it, and then remove or disconnect the original account using the steps above.
This ensures the PC still has at least one administrator account for management and security.
4. What this does not do
- Removing an account from Settings > Accounts > Other users or Access work or school does not close or delete the Microsoft account itself.
- The account can still be used on other devices or added back later if needed.
