Hello, thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A.

Do you remember installing any updates that have caused the touchscreen to stop working?

    1

Try the System Restore method -

Click Windows + R key, type rstrui.exe, and click ok.

Select 'Next' and choose the date/time you would like to restore your computer to.

Click finish to complete the restoration.

    2

    Check for Optional updates.

Go to Start > Settings > Windows Update> Advanced Options.

In the Advanced options window that opens, make sure Receive updates for other Microsoft products is switched on.

Under additional options, select Optional updates.

Select all the optional updates, and click Download & Install.

Then, go back and check for updates.

Download and install all the available updates for your device and restart your computer.

Let me know if you still need more help.

Because the HID-compliant touch screen entry is missing in Device Manager and touch stopped working, the touchscreen driver/firmware is likely missing or not loading correctly.

    Try these steps in order:

    1. Open Device Manager
      1. Right-click the Start menu and select Device Manager.
      2. Select View > Show hidden devices and check again under Human Interface Devices to confirm that HID-compliant touch screen really is not listed.
    2. Reinstall touchscreen drivers (if this is a Surface or similar PC) If this is a Surface device (non‑Arm model):
      1. In Device Manager, expand Human Interface Devices.
      2. If present, right-click Intel(R) Precise Touch Device and select Uninstall device, then Uninstall.
      3. Right-click any HID-compliant touch screen entries (if they appear after step 1) and select Uninstall device, then Uninstall for each.
      4. In the Action menu, select Scan for hardware changes.
      5. Restart the PC and make sure it is connected to the internet so Windows can automatically download and reinstall the touchscreen driver.
      6. Test touch by opening a browser and trying to scroll, pinch to zoom, swipe, and long‑press.
Important: Do not uninstall drivers this way on Windows Arm-based devices such as Surface Pro X, Surface Pro 9 with 5G, Surface Pro (11th Edition), Surface Laptop (7th Edition), Surface Laptop 13-inch (1st Edition), or Surface Pro 12-inch (1st Edition). On those devices, removing drivers may require a full system reset to restore them.
    3. Manually install drivers/firmware (Surface only) If using a Surface and the Surface Touch firmware or HID-compliant touchscreen driver is missing or shows an error in Device Manager, download and install the correct driver and firmware package for the model from Download drivers and firmware for Surface, then restart and test touch again.
    4. If the touchscreen still does not appear If, after reinstalling and scanning for hardware changes, there is still no HID-compliant touch screen entry and no Surface Touch firmware, this usually indicates a hardware or firmware issue. In that case, follow the guidance for the device (for Surface, submit a service order or contact support) so the hardware can be checked or repaired.
