A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
Yes, getting a new phone is very likely the cause.
When changing phones, the Microsoft Authenticator app (or any MFA method tied to the old device) does not automatically transfer. The new phone must be set up again as an MFA method for the account.
Use these steps:
- On a device where sign-in still works (for example, a PC browser), go to the Additional security verification / Security info page for the work or school account.
- Remove the old phone as a verification method.
- Add the new phone:
- Choose Add sign-in method.
- Select Phone, then enter the new phone number.
- Install Microsoft Authenticator on the new phone and follow the prompts to add the account, if required.
If there is no working device to access the Security info page, contact the organization’s admin or IT support and ask them to reset MFA methods or require re-registration so setup can be done again on the new phone.
