Windows Audio (Audiosrv) must be running and set to start automatically; if it cannot start, no sound devices will work.
Use these steps to try to restore it:
- Confirm Windows Audio services are set to Automatic and restart them
- Press
Windows + R, type services.msc, press Enter.
- Find Windows Audio.
- Ensure Startup type is Automatic.
- Right‑click Windows Audio and select Restart (or Start if stopped).
- Find Windows Audio Endpoint Builder and also set Startup type to Automatic, then Restart it.
- Test audio.
Restarting both services is a supported way to restore audio when it has stopped working.
- If audio still does not work
Because Windows Audio Services manage all audio devices and effects, if they are stopped or cannot start, audio will not function and any dependent services or drivers will also fail to start. In that case, after ensuring the services are set to start automatically, reinstalling or updating the audio driver and then repeating step 1 is required so that the services can manage the device correctly.
If the error 0x80070005 (Access is denied) persists even when starting from an administrator account, the issue is with permissions or system configuration outside the scope of the available documentation; in that case, backing up data and considering a repair install or contacting Microsoft Support is recommended.
