Make sure that your files are in the designated documents folder on your system. That may be a sufficient fix.

Hi, I'm John! I will help you with this.

Are the documents stored on your PC, OneDrive, USB drive, or a shared/network folder?

This error usually happens when you do not have permission to access the file, the file is blocked, the document was moved from another PC or account, or OneDrive is not syncing properly.

Try right-clicking the document > Properties. Do you see an “Unblock” checkbox at the bottom under General? If yes, check it and click Apply.

Also, are you able to open other Word documents normally, or is it only this specific file?

The message indicates that the files are protected with restricted permissions (Information Rights Management – IRM) and the current account or Office version does not have rights to open or edit them.

    On macOS, use these steps:

    1. Open one of the affected documents in Word for Mac.
    2. When prompted, sign in with the account that should have access to the file (the one the owner granted permissions to). If this is the first time connecting to the licensing server, enter the username and password, and select Save password in Mac OS keychain so credentials are reused.
    3. After the document opens, use the Message Bar at the top and select View Permissions (or Change Permissions if Full Control is granted) to see what actions are allowed and what is restricted.
    4. If access is still denied, the most common causes are:
      • The signed-in account does not have permission to the file.
      • The file uses an information protection policy that the current Office version does not support.

    To resolve this:

    • Confirm with the document owner that the correct email/account has been granted access and, if needed, ask them to update the permissions.
    • Make sure Office for Mac is fully updated. Some protection features (for example, sensitivity labels with dynamic watermarking) require Word for Mac version 16.87 or later. If the file uses such a policy and Word is older than 16.87, update Office or open the file in Office for the web.

If, after updating and signing in with the correct account, access is still denied, the owner must adjust the IRM or sensitivity label settings on the file to grant appropriate rights.
