Follow these steps to troubleshoot and improve performance on a Windows 11 PC that is lagging even when CPU and SSD seem fine:
- Install all Windows and driver updates
- Select Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.
- Install everything offered and restart if required.
- Then go to Start > Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates, install any available drivers, and restart.
- Scan for malware Malware can cause lag even on good hardware.
- Select Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Windows Security > Virus & threat protection.
- Select Quick scan and let it complete.
- Free up disk space Low free space can slow the system.
- Select Start > Settings > System > Storage.
- Turn on Storage Sense, then select Configure Storage Sense or run it now and under Free up space now choose Clean now.
- Still in Storage, select Temporary files, choose what to remove, then select Remove files.
- Optionally run Disk Cleanup: select Start, type Disk Cleanup, open it, choose the system drive, and clean unneeded files.
- Remove unused apps and background apps
- Go to Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Uninstall apps not needed.
- For apps that remain, select More options (… ) > Advanced options and under Background app permissions set Let this app run in the background to Never for apps that do not need background activity.
- Disable startup apps
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Right-click unneeded items and select Disable.
- Adjust visual effects for performance
- Select Start, type Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows, and open it.
- On the Visual Effects tab, select Adjust for best performance.
- Set power mode to Best performance (if on AC power)
- Select Start > Settings > System > Power & battery.
- In Power mode, select Best performance.
- Note: This increases power use and heat, especially on laptops.
- Optimize drives
- Select Start, type Defragment and Optimize Drives, and open it.
- Select the system drive and choose Optimize.
- Check which processes cause lag
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- On Processes, sort by CPU, Memory, and Disk to see what spikes when lag appears.
- Right-click and End task for apps that are clearly not needed (do not end system processes).
- Reduce notifications and close unused apps
- Go to Start > Settings > System > Notifications and turn off notifications for apps not needed.
- Close unused apps and browser tabs; if lag continues, select Start > Power > Restart, then open only the apps needed.
If the system is still lagging after these steps, the issue may be related to specific apps or hardware limits; monitoring Task Manager while lag occurs will show which component (CPU, memory, disk) is actually under stress.
