Switching between Experimental channels (25H2 → 26H1) is controlled by what builds are currently being flighted to each channel and by the build number already installed on the device.
From the flighting guidance, when moving between channels the key factor is whether the current build number is lower than, equal to, or higher than the build in the target channel. If the installed build is equal to or lower than the build number in the channel being moved to, simply changing the channel in Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program is sufficient and the next available update from that channel will arrive when it is offered to that device. If the installed build is higher than the build number in the target channel, switching directly is not supported and a clean installation of a suitable build is required before joining that channel.
Because Experimental 25H2 and Experimental 26H1 are separate flighting lines, changing the setting alone does not guarantee an immediate new build. The device will only receive a 26H1 build when:
- A 26H1 build is actively being flighted to that channel, and
- The current build number is not higher than the 26H1 build being offered.
Deleting the WindowsSelfHost registry key is only documented as a way to leave Insider flighting or reset Insider configuration, not as a supported way to force a move between higher and lower build trains. When the installed build is ahead of the target channel’s build, the documented path is to perform a clean install of a suitable Windows build and then re-enroll in the desired channel.
If no 26H1 build higher than 26300.8553 is currently flighted to the Experimental (26H1) line, there will be no update offered even after changing the channel; in that case, waiting for a newer 26H1 build to be published is required.
