I cannot open a Word document

Unable to open a Word document, but Excel, Publisher and PowerPoint work fine.

    Whatever the problem was - it has resolved itself. However, it might have something to do with the Adobe/Acrobat interchange. I had a Word document that I saved as Adobe. Later, I had to export that .pdf back to Word to do some total reformatting. While trying to make that work was when the problem began. Yesterday (7/11/26) when I tried "one more time" to open the Word document, the file opened but had a blurb about Adobe not connecting (my words, not Adobe). Now, everything is working great - no issues!

    Hi Ginger, I noticed you're already troubleshooting with Stefan. Just to add a quick suggestion that might help,

    Kindly try pressing Windows Key + R to open Run, type

    winword /a
    

    and press Enter to see if Word bypasses the freeze. If it still doesn't open, going ahead with Stefan's suggestion for an Online Repair would be the best next step. Thank you.

    Does the freezing occur at any time when you try open Word itself or does it occur when you open a particular document?

    If the problem is not document-specific, exit the splash screen (click the "X"), restart your PC and then try to start Word again.

    If the problem remains, run an Online Repair; see https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/lifecycle/repair-an-office-application.

    Hi, good day!

    To help narrow down the cause, could you let me know a few details?

    • Does Word itself open if you launch it from the Start menu, or does it fail to open?

    Does the problem affect all Word documents or just one specific document?

    Do you receive any error message? If so, what is the exact wording?

    When did you first notice the issue? Did it start after a recent Windows or Microsoft 365 update?

    In the meantime, please try the following first

    Open Word first, then go to File > Open > Browse and try opening the document from there.
