Bitlocker issue

Dear Microsoft Support Escalation Team,

I am writing to make a formal complaint regarding the handling of my existing Microsoft Support case and to request that this matter be immediately escalated to a supervisor or higher-level support team.

My Dell Inspiron 16 laptop has been locked by BitLocker for approximately one month, and I have been unable to access my computer. My Microsoft account with the email address [Moderator note: PII removed]@gmail.com, shows my registered Dell computer under the device folder, but indicates the BitLocker recovery key was not uploaded to my Microsoft account when I purchased and received this laptop as a new device in December 2023.

I have already contacted Microsoft Technical Support multiple times by telephone and through the online chat service. Unfortunately, the technical support team in India was unable to locate the recovery key or resolve the problem. Despite my repeated efforts to obtain assistance, the issue remains unresolved.

What is particularly concerning is that I discovered today that my Dell Inspiron 16 device has been removed from my Microsoft account. I did not authorize or request the removal of this device. I find this extremely concerning and unacceptable, particularly while I am already dealing with an unresolved BitLocker issue.

In addition, I am now unable to access Microsoft's online chat support because the error message says “The request is blocked.” it appears that my IP address has been blocked from using the chat function.

This has further prevented me from obtaining assistance and has made an already difficult situation even more frustrating.

At this point, I am requesting that Microsoft's upper-level management or an appropriate escalation team take ownership of this case rather than directing me back to general technical support.

Specifically, I request that Microsoft:

1.       Immediately escalate this matter to a supervisor or higher-level technical support team.

2.       Review the complete history of my existing support case and all previous interactions.

3.       Investigate why my Dell Inspiron 16 was removed from my Microsoft account and determine who or what initiated the removal.

4.       Investigate the circumstances surrounding the missing BitLocker recovery key and determine whether it can be recovered or otherwise located.

5.       Review why my access to Microsoft's online chat support appears to have been blocked.

6.       Provide me with a clear explanation of what happened and what Microsoft can do to resolve this matter.

7.       Ensure that my support case remains open until the underlying issue has been properly addressed.

I understand that BitLocker is designed to protect a computer and its data, and I am not asking Microsoft to bypass BitLocker's security protections. I am asking Microsoft to investigate whether the recovery key associated with my device was properly stored, associated with my account, or otherwise accessible through Microsoft's systems.

I have spent considerable time attempting to resolve this matter through Microsoft's normal support channels without success. I am therefore asking that this complaint receive the attention of an appropriate supervisor or upper-level support team.

Please confirm receipt of this complaint, provide me with the escalation/reference number, and let me know who or which team will be responsible for investigating this matter.

I look forward to receiving a substantive response and a clear plan for resolving this issue.

Sincerely,

BX

Hi Bin Xu,

Please note that our forum is a public platform, and we will modify your question to hide private, identifiable information in the description. Kindly ensure that you hide such details the next time you post to protect personal data.

I can understand why you're frustrated. Being locked out of your laptop for a month, contacting support multiple times without a resolution, and then noticing the device is no longer listed in your Microsoft account would be concerning for anyone.

That said, I must note in advance that Microsoft Q&A is just a public community forum. Contributors here are fellow users; we can help provide guidance and explain how BitLocker works. But no one has the ability to review support cases, investigate account activity, or contact Microsoft's teams on your behalf for escalation.

Regarding the BitLocker issue, there are also some realistic limitations I think you should know of. While Microsoft Support may be able to review the history of your support case and investigate account-related concerns, the outcome of your BitLocker recovery situation might remain the same:

  • Even if Microsoft investigates the circumstances surrounding the missing BitLocker recovery key, the critical issue remains whether the recovery key was ever backed up. If it was not, neither a Microsoft Support agent nor Microsoft itself can recover information that was never stored after the fact.
  • Similarly, Microsoft may be able to review available records and explain what information they can verify, but there may be limits to what can be determined from historical account and support data.

If the recovery key wasn't found in any of your Microsoft accounts, work or school accounts, printed copy, USB drive, or other backup location, Microsoft cannot retrieve, recreate the key, or unlock your device. The only remaining option is reset or reinstall Windows, which unfortunately will erase the encrypted data.

I know that is probably not the answer you were hoping for. However, I think it is important to be transparent: even if a supervisor reviews the case or Microsoft investigates what happened, that does not necessarily mean the recovery key can be recovered.

    Hi Lychee-Ng,

    Thank you for your reply.

Regardless of the BitLocker issue, I would like to know the most effective and appropriate way to have my existing Microsoft support cases formally reviewed and escalated to the appropriate Microsoft team. Specifically, I am requesting that Microsoft investigate the activity and changes associated with my account and provide clarification regarding what occurred.

I am requesting an official explanation for the following:

Why was my device information removed from my Microsoft account?

Why has my request for assistance through Microsoft Technical Support’s chat service been blocked or otherwise prevented?

What actions or changes were made to my account, when did they occur, and why?

Which Microsoft team is responsible for reviewing and resolving this matter?

Please advise me on the proper escalation process and how I can have these issues reviewed by a qualified Microsoft support or account-security team. I would also appreciate it if my existing support cases could be reviewed together so that the full history and circumstances can be taken into consideration.

I am seeking a clear, official explanation and a documented resolution rather than simply troubleshooting the BitLocker issue in isolation.

Thank you for your assistance. I look forward to your guidance on the appropriate next steps.

    Thanks,

    BX
