Upgrade through Windows Update first; if the laptop is eligible, Windows 11 can be installed free while retaining your files, applications, and settings.
1. Check whether the laptop is eligible
- Open Start → Settings → Update & Security → Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install any available Windows 10 updates and restart, because pending updates can prevent the Windows 11 offer from appearing.
- Check Windows Update again. If offered, select Download and install → Accept and install. Restart when prompted. The laptop may restart several times.^1^
If Windows Update does not show the upgrade:
- Search the taskbar for PC Health Check and open it.
- Under Windows 11 eligibility, select Check now.
- Note any failed requirement. PC Health Check identifies why the laptop is or is not eligible.^2^
Windows 11 requires, among other items, a supported processor, 4 GB RAM, 64 GB storage, UEFI/Secure Boot capability, and TPM 2.0.^3^
Before starting, back up important files to OneDrive or an external drive and keep the laptop connected to power.
2. If eligible but Windows Update does not offer it
Use Microsoft’s Windows 11 Installation Assistant:
- Open the Windows 11 Installation Assistant link from Microsoft’s installation guide.
- Download and run the assistant with an administrator account.
- Select Accept and install.
- When prompted, select Restart now.
- Sign in after installation completes.^1^
A temporary compatibility safeguard might delay the upgrade even when the basic hardware requirements are met. In that case, wait until Windows Update says Windows 11 is ready rather than forcing the installation.^2^
3. If the laptop is not eligible
Do not bypass the processor, TPM, or other hardware checks. Microsoft does not recommend installing Windows 11 on devices that fail its requirements.^1^
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. The computer will continue working, but it no longer receives free Windows security fixes. The supported alternatives are:
- Replace the laptop with one that supports Windows 11.
- Enroll the existing laptop in the Windows 10 Consumer Extended Security Updates (ESU) program, which can protect it through October 12, 2027, while planning a replacement.^4^
