Word Master Documents - using Sharepoint

Is there a way to use the Master Document features of Word with documents stored on Sharepoint?

I've set one up locally, which works fine. I now have to add the documents to Sharepoint, which inevitably means the document links no longer work.

Attempting to re-build the Master Doc using documents stored on sharepoint also does not appear to work.

That's good, because you do not want to be using Master documents. They are famous for corrupted the sub-documents in them and losing information. It's fine to create temporary master documents for purposes like printing or making a PDF, but then they should be deleted.

Copy the sub-documents to your local hard drive, create a master document, print the file, then delete the master document.

I agree with John. Using Master Documents for shared editing could be likened to walking around with a "Kick Me" sign on your back, with far worse consequences. Master Documents is only used for very important big projects and it is designed to completely destroy them. Hi @Leon Lonsdale ,
    Welcome to Q&A forum!
Please note that the Master Document function may only be available for files stored locally. If the file is stored in SharePoint, you can try to sync the file locally for checking.
    Sync SharePoint files and folders
And then we can find it in the OneDrive folder, as shown below.
